How To Prevent Link Color History Sniffing in Firefox

By default, links alter color when you have visited them. How To Cancel Print Jobs in Queue

Generally the crest + currently printing is the culprit causing the trouble, so try canceling it first if dealing with a departmental printer. However, you may have to eventually delete (purge) all the print jobs in the list to get the printer to print again. HelpLine staff should purge all public print queues to clear out any old abandoned print requests that may still be waiting to print.

The Cancel command is used to delete a only one print job, while the Purge command is used to clear all jobs from the queue. Note: Generally most users have permissiens set to cancel only their own print jobs and no one else's. The Purge option is available only to users with special privileges, such as the HelpLine staff, the LBIS staff, or certain individuals who manage the printers for their department.

Instructions for clearing print jobs from the queue:
• Pause the print queue:
1. In the print queue screen click Printer in the menu bar.
2. Click Pause Printing (a checkmark will appear before Pause Printing).

• Cancel a single print job (usually the top print document) in the queue:
1. Highlight the top print job in the list.
2. Click Document, then Cancel (this cancels only the one highlighted document).
3. If you cannot get the top print job to disappear, you may have to recycle the printer once or twice to clear the memory of the printer completely. (See instructions in next section RECYCLE THE PRINTER).

• OR:
• Purge all print jobs in the queue: (requires special privileges)
1. Click Printer, then Purge Print Documents.
2. The entire list of print jobs should disappear.

• Unpause (restart) the print queue:
1. (Remember to unpause the queue or the job won't print!!)
2. Click Printer, then Pause Printing (checkmark now disappears from Pause Printing option)
3. Exit print queue screen.

• Try printing a second time.

Tab hopping in windows control panel

Another way to quickly utilize Control Panel settings is to make a direct call to the particular Control Panel program. Using this method you can even open a Control Panel to a specific program.

Control Panel applications are stored in files with a .cpl extension. If you take a look in your Windows\System32 folder you'll find them there. (It makes it easier to see them all if you right-click in a blenk spot and choose Arrange Icons By -> Type, select the Details View, and then scroll down the list and look for Control Panel Extensions.)
A faster way to run any applet is to issue a direct command:
control applet.cpl

where applet is any Control Panel applet on your system. Table 1 shows a list of the most common ones. Simply typing control by itself opens the Control Panel.
Table 1. Common Control Panel applets

Note options marked with an * have special shortcut names which may be used instead of the usual control applet.cpl,applet_number format.
So, for example, to open the Sounds and Audio Device Properties dialog you click Start -> Run, type:

control mmsys.cpl
and click OK.

How, then, do you gain access to a specific tab in that dialog box? You use an extended form of the Control command:

control applet.cpl,@applet_number,tab_number

The applet_number is rarely required. There are a couple of cpl files which give access to multiple applets and in those cases you use the applet_number to identify which one you're calling. For example, main.cpl provides access to both the Mouse and the Keyboard properties. The numbering starts at 0, so control main.cpl,@0 opens the Mouse Properties, control main.cpl,@1 opens the Keyboard Properties. If you don't include an applet_number, @0 is assumed.

The tab_number is the number of the tab you want selected in the dialog box, with numbering starting from 0 from the left.

If you want to use a tab_number but want to omit the applet_number (or leave its value at 0), insert an extra comma before the tab_number to indicate the missing value. Thus:
control main.cpl,,3

opens the Mouse Properties dialog to its fourth tab.
So to open the Sounds and Audio Device Properties dialog with the Sounds tab already selected, click Start -> Run and enter the command:

How To Install Windows 7 On Almost Any Netbook

If the RC is any indication (and it should be), then Windows 7 will be a nice upgrade for any Windows user. The new Operating System, however, is a gigantic step up for net book users. Vista is notoriously poorly suited to net books; a pram resource hog that subjects its users to incessant dialog boxes and requires far too many clicks to perform basic tasks, it's kind of a nightmare to use on a 9.0 inch laptop with a 1.50 inch track pad.

Windows XP has been given a boost by notebooks, as its system requirements—more-or-less decided in 2001—are more in line with the specs hardware like the Eee PC and Mini nine. But let's face it: XP is almost ten year old.

Hence, Windows 7. It's noticeably faster than Vista on low-spec machines, properly optimised for netbook hardware, and, most importantly, free (for now). Thing is, installation isn't quite as easy as it is on a regular PC—in fact, it can be a pain in the ass: netbooks don't have DVD drives, which means you've either got to get your hands on an external drive or boot from a USB stick for a clean install. Furthermore, smaller SSDs, like the 8GB units in popular versions of the Dell Mini 9 and Acer Aspire One, make a default installation impossible, or at least impractically tight. Luckily, there are simple methods to deal with both of these problems. Let's get started.

What You'll Need
• A netbook (Minimum 1GB of RAM, 8GB storage space)
• A 4GB or larger USB drive
• A Windows 7 RC Image (details below)
• A Windows XP/Vista PC or a Mac to prepare the flash drive
• For low-end netbooks, lots (and lots) of time

Getting Windows 7
Downloading Windows 7 is a piece of cake. Just navigate to this page and download the 32-bit version. You'll need to get a free Windows Live ID if you don't already have one, but this takes about two minutes.

Microsoft will then give you your very own Windows 7 Licence key, valid until June 1st of next year. (Although after March 1st, it'll drive you to the edge of sanity by shutting off every two hours. But that's a different story, and March is a long way off). Microsoft will then offer up your ISO through a nifty little download manager applet, complete with a "resume" function. There are ways to sidestep this, but don't: you'd be surprised how hard it is to keep a single HTTP connection alive for long enough to download a 2.36GB file.

Preparing Your Flash Drive
This is the annoying part, but it's not necessarily that difficult. Here are some guides, by OS (some linked for length):

• Windows XP
• Windows Vista
• Mac OS X (courtesy of Ubuntu, funnily enough):
1. Open a Terminal (under Utilities)
2. Run diskutil list and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2)
3. Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN (replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2)
4. Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.iso of=/dev/diskN bs=1m (replace /path/to/downloaded.iso with the path where the image file is located; for example, ./windows7.iso)
5. Run diskutil eject /dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes (this can take a few hours on slower drives)
As some commenters have pointed out, you can also make a flash drive bootable with utilities like LiveUSB Helper. Once you've done this, you can mount your Windows 7 ISO with a utility like DaemonTools Lite (For Windows) or MountMe (for Mac), and just copy over all the files to your newly-bootable drive.

Starting Your Install
Ok! Now you've got a bootable flash drive, and you're ready to start installing. It should go without saying, but once you start this process, you'll lose all existing data on your netbook, so you should back up any important files before going through with anything from here forward.
Insert your USB drive and reboot your netbook. As soon as your BIOS screen flashes, you should see instructions for a) changing your netbook's boot order or b) entering its BIOS setup. In the first situation, simply assign the USB drive as the first boot device. In the second, navigate through your BIOS settings until you find a "Default Boot Order" page, and do the same thing there.

From there, you should see the first Windows 7 installation screens. Anyone with a 16GB or larger storage device in their netbook can just follow the instructions until the installation completes, and skip the next step.

If your SSD is smaller than 16GB, or if you just want to save some space, do what they say, but only until the first reboot. After the Windows 7 installer has restarted your computer, you'll need to modify the boot order again. Do not allow installation to continue! Manually change the boot order to prioritize the USB drive again, just as you did at the beginning of the installation.
Compression!

Once the Windows 7 installer has copied most of its system files to your drive, you're going to tighten them up with Windows' trusty old "Compact" command. Here's what you do, as described by Electronic Pulp:

Choose "Repair" at the Windows 7 Setup screen, go to "Command Prompt" and enter the following code:
d: (or whatever drive letter is assigned to your SSD)
cd \windows\system32
compact.exe d:\*.* /c /s /i

And wait. And wait and wait and wait. This can take anywhere from eight hours to two days, so you'll want to set your netbook down in a corner and forget about it for a while. [Note: compressing so many of your system files does have a performance cost, but in day-to-day use, it's negligible]

Once this is done, reboot the netbook again and let it continue the installation as normal. That's it!

All said and done, an 8GB SSD should have nearly 2GB of free space left—not much, but enough to work with. And given that most netbooks come with inbuilt, flush SD expansion slots, and that high-capacity SD cards are extremely affordable, having a small amount of space on your root drive isn't at all prohibitive.

There are other ways to slim down a Windows 7 install—namely by using programs like vLite, which can strip out some of Windows' fat directly from the ISO—but Windows' built-in file compression is the easiest way to squeeze Windows 7 onto your skimpy 8GB SSD.
and Customisation Help

Windows 7 runs fairly well out of the box, but as with any new Windows installation, you're going to need to download some drivers to get things working properly. Vista drivers usually do the trick, but sometimes workarounds are necessary. Thankfully, most popular netbooks have spawned helpful fan forums, many of which have active Windows 7 subforums. Some of the best:

How to Fix Slow UAC Prompts in Vista

Question: I have a HP DV67OO series laptop with the AMD Turion 64X2 dual core processor and Windows Vista Home Pro with Service Pack 1. As long as I'm just running generic applications that don't need to do security authentication, the system's speed is acceptable. However, any time an application does need to authenticate, the screen goes blank for about 15 to 20 seconds before the authentication prompt window appears. There appears to be a great deal of disk activity during this "dead time". If you have suggestions of how to determine what's slowing it down and how to improve it, my wife and I would really be grateful.

Answer: The User Account Control characteristic called Secure Desktop is what's giving you a problem. To ensure that malware can't interfere with the UAC dialog, it puts the system on hold until you respond to the UAC prompt. Some systems, like mine, go entirely black for a moment before coming back in secure desktop mode. Others, like yours, take a long time to enter that mode.

The Windows 7 release candidate gives you more control over how UAC works. Where Vista just has On and Off, Windows 7 defines four levels of UAC security. Changing it from the third level (the default) down to the second does one specific thing - it disables use of secure mode. The control dialog has a message: "Not recommended. Choose this only if it takes a long time to dim the desktop on your computer". That indicates that Microsoft recognizes the problem.

As it turns out, you can exercise this level of control in Vista too, just with a little more effort. In a non-Home edition, you'd first launch Local Security Policy (type "security" at the Start menu to find it). You'd open Local Policies in the list and choose Security Options. You'd double-click the policy "User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation" and set it to Disabled.

However, you're using a Home edition and hence don't have the handy Local Security Policy applet. So you'll do it differently. Click Start and launch REGEDIT. Navigate to the Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. Right-click in the right-hand pane and choose New | DWORD Value from the popup menu. Name the value PromptOnSecureDesktop and make sure it's data is set to 0. In my experience this change takes effect immediately.

This tweak does reduce your security. The whole dim-screen secure desktop thing is devised so no malicious application could fake a click on "Continue". I don't know of any malware that attempts this sort of attack. It would be semi-pointless since the vast majority of Vista systems haven't been tweaked to remove secure desktop. And of course it would be an ineffective attack under a Standard account, since it would have to somehow obtain and enter your password

Top five steps to stay secure on Internet

5 things you should know about windows 7

1. Keep your PC clean
If you share your computer with less-experienced computer users then you’ll know the troubles that can arise as they mess up your settings and unknowingly install corrupt software. Windows 7 can help you to avoid these problems. Enable PC Safeguard on the kids’ account and they’ll be able to log on and play as normal – but when they log off, any settings they've changed are reversed, files they've saved are deleted and your hard drive is returned to its original state.

2. Restrict other users
If Safeguard isn't enough, try AppLocker. It gives you even more control, restricting users to only the programs you specify. It's able to automatically create rules for your installed programs, and other regulations can be added in seconds.

3. Action Center
Windows 7 replaces the Security Center with the more all-purpose Action Center, which warns you of PC maintenance and back-up issues as well as potential security problems. It’s prone to complaining if your security settings don’t meet its approval, but at least now there’s an effective solution.
If you regularly see messages telling you that you’ve turned the Windows firewall off, say, then you can choose to disable just those while leaving the more useful alerts active.

4. Tone down UAC
User Account Control irritated many Windows Vista users with its constant warnings that ‘Windows needs your permission to continue’. Windows 7 improves the situation by displaying fewer warnings and providing additional UAC tweaks. Tell the system not to raise warnings if you change Windows settings and you’ll be able to use the Control Panel without any prompts. Alerts will only appear if a program tries to perform a similar action.

5. BitLocker to go
Encryption isn’t just for hard drives anymore: the Windows 7 version of BitLocker can protect removable (and easily lost) devices such as USB flash drives, too. Right-click the device in Explorer, select ‘Turn on BitLocker’ and then enter and confirm a password to protect your data from snoopers.

When you come across a runtime error 91, you may find out that there are a number of different issues that may have caused it. For instance, you might discover that perhaps you may be forced to end a program without saving your work prior, or the several programs that you're running might decide to crash all at the same time. This may even cause your computer to hang, and you may lose whatever unsaved data you might have been working on.

The first thing that you should consider when you experience a runtime error 91 is to run your antivirus program. The error may be indicative 0f a malicious application on your pc that's causing your other applications to crash, and you will need to be rid of it immediately. Now that your computer is no longer connected to the internet and vulnerable to more malware, boot up your computer in safe-mode. In safe mode, you will find that a lot of the programs that viruses that cause the runtime error 91 will be more exposed and thus far easier to remove. Run your antivirus programs until you come up with no results and then restart your computer and see if you are still getting the errors.

Though there may be several causes for the runtime error 91, remember that you are looking at something which is often caused by virus issues. Take the time to prevent further incidences of a viral infection by protecting yourself with a firewall, and make sure that you run virus scans regularly and frequently.

How to solve Runtime Error 13 windows

The Runtime Error 13 is a type mismatch or program error that can happen when running all sorts of programs that utilizes the Visual Basics Environment as part of its launch matrix. This can vary from financial software all the way to antivirus software, all of which, in some way or the other, make use of the VB environment. Solving this error is quite similar to the way everyone solves other runtime errors, which is identifying the break in the chain.

A runtime error occurs when there is a delay within the sequence of launches or system components that run in a specific order to launch a software. For example, when launching a game, Windows needs to load the appropriate data files, system files, game data files and many others before the shell of the game can be launched. Normally, these files are run in a sequence (which is where the term 'runtime' comes from) and when this happens, the problems will rear their heads when there is either a missing file, an inert file, a file with a wrong file name or any other conflict. When it comes to the VB environment, there are usually conflicts and system errors.

What you need to do is try to identify the files (used by the program itself) that have caused the error. Check for possible reported conflicts online by the specific developers and they usually will have directions on how to avoid these conflicts. They might even have posted a software patch for you to install that will solve the problem, and this is the easiest way to resolve runtime errors. Another way is to reinstall the software, as a bad install might be one of the cases where run time errors can occur, especially when it comes to critical drivers and system files needed by Windows and VB to run the specific program. Reinstallation usually solves this problem.

Another option is to get a PC or Registry Cleaner, which is one of the best ways to get rid of program conflicts (said to be the major cause of runtime errors). It might even be just a problem with the integrity of the registry, all of which a registry cleaner can fix and sort out within a few minutes. These are some of the ways that you can adopt to solve the problem, but if it goes beyond that, then there might be an issue of a Trojan or even a virus that has infected the operating system. They have been known to cause run time errors by changing the code of random files and even the VB environment. Scan your pc with good antivirus software and you might be able to find and weed out a pesky Trojan or worm hiding in your system memory.

So you see, troubleshooting runtime error 13 is not necessarily all that hard to do. It shares a common solution as other runtime errors, and once you've weeded out the problem within the registry, runtime error 13 should no longer be a problem to you

Will Your Device Work with Windows 7

Every hardware that makes up your computer requires a driver file to operate correctly, Look at Windows Vista. In fact, crashing and incompatible drivers was one of the most common complaints among early adopters of current operating system. Sure, Service Pack one and numerous driver updates from hardware vendors solved up many of the problems, but in starting, basic system functions like sound and graphics just didn't work right.

Will Windows 7 undergo the same fate? The short answer is, it probably won't. The opening of Windows Vista brought a alteration of the driver architecture for many major components—in particular, the graphics and audio functions. Windows 7 builds on Vista's revisions, without requiring a total rewrite of the code. That said, will old products work? Will Windows Vista drivers work if a company hasn't updated for 7? Let's find out.

Before we dive into the individual components, a note on availability: The first stop for anyone seeking a new driver to address a compatibility problem or device that doesn't work properly (or simply looking to benefit from the performance boosts and extra functionality usually brought about by an updated driver) should be the hardware manufacturer. Dell, Gateway, HP, Lenovo, and every other PC maker strives to provide you with the most stable drivers they possibly can.
Besides, certain companies have custom parts and specially crafted drivers designed completely for their own computers; you'll observe this in particular with laptops and netbooks. These custom parts won't work properly without custom drivers, and may not support the customizations made by your manufacturer. Some component makers claim there's a chance you could even break a device permanently. Before downloading and merrily installing, know what you're getting into.

Desktop Virus Warning - Do You Need to Remove Desktop Virus?

Are you getting a desktop virus warning? This has happened to the best of us. We are minding our own business when one day we get on our computers and unexpectedly everything has changed! We begin getting random pop up messages reading:

• Warning! Spyware detected on your computer!
• Your computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection!
• You have a security problem.
• Dangerous trojan horses detected!

Even shoddier is the fact that sometimes your desktop background will also amend. It may show red warning and biohazard signs that your computer is under serious risk. The virus will also block you from changing them back.

If you were not already aware, the desktop virus warning is fake. But the trick is, your computer is infected and in serious danger. But the virus is the one creating all this mayhem! This is called a rascal spyware program. It gets onto your system and creates these fake pop ups to frighten you into downloading their software. If infected you need to remove desktop virus and spyware as soon as possible.

How to remove desktop virus
There are essentially three types of this virus. There are the registry entries which create the desktop warnings and change your settings. The DLL files are usually the ones that create the fake pop up warnings in the center of your screen and the taskbar. And typically if the rogue program has been installed you must remove the executable file (exe).

This can get quite complicated, however, especially for the computer novice. I don't recommend messing with the registry unless you know exactly what you are doing. If you remove the wrong files you can cause even worse damage to your system.

This is why I suggest downloading a program to remove the desktop virus warning. There is an excellent software program that can only remove desktop viruses, but also has real time defense to prevent future attacks.

Troubleshooting Missing Drivers

When Microsoft Windows tells you that a device may not work properly because the operating system can’t find a proper driver for it, it’s time to look for a pc driver that will work. This generally happens when you connect a device to the pc for the first time

For the majority of cases with new devices, the troubleshooting steps for any recent Windows 0S are as follows. Sometimes you’ll find the right driver with the first step; at 0ther times, try all the steps before you find something that works.

1) Browse to the device manufacturer’s Web site and download the most recent driver for your specific device and OS, such as the file DiJ_AI0_DriverOnly_NonNetwork_ENU.exe for an HP DeskJet F4180 on Vista at www.hp.com. Double-click the downloaded file to install the driver. (If the device is built into a chip on a motherboard, such as a hard drive controller, look on the motherboard vendor’s site for drivers for that particular chip on that particular board. If it’s a graphics card, the maker of the GPU/VPU chip, such as ATI or Nvidia, will probably have more recent drivers than the card vendor.)

2) If you can’t find driver downloads on the manufacturer’s site, or the site itself, look for the driver that came with the device, if applicable. It will usually be on an installation COMPACT DISK or floppy diskette. Look around the COMPACT DISK or floppy for the driver for your specific device and OS and then double-click it to install it. If the driver file isn’t executable, such as an INF file, you’ll need to launch Windows’ driver installation wizard, such as the Add Hardware Wizard in WinXP’s Control Panel. Tell it to look for a driver in the correct folder on the COMPACT DISK or diskette. If Windows still says it doesn’t find a proper driver there and you’re absolutely sure that driver will work, use the Have Disk option to force Windows to install it. Note that drivers that come with a device are often old, though they may still work fine. Older drivers may have some bugs that are fixed in later driver versions. On the other hand, sometimes the latest drivers introduce new problems, making a slightly older version a better choice.

3) If you still can’t find a suitable driver, perhaps Windows can. Windows comes with many not-terribly-recent drivers for various peripherals, and it might just have one that will work for your device. Launch the Add Hardware Wizard. Windows will look for unconnected devices without drivers. When it’s done, tell the wizard to automatically find and install a working driver. Enable the option to have Windows check online, if present, and perhaps on a COMPACT DISK or diskette as described in the previous step, if applicable. Note that Windows almost always has older drivers than the manufacturer could provide. Also, the OS will often choose an older driver that’s been certified by Microsoft’s WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) as guaranteed to work with Windows over a newer, “uncertified” one. WHQL-certified drivers are “safe” choices, although they may lack some features or performance enhancements found in the current drivers.

4) No luck? Try looking through the Add Hardware or other wizard’s list of drivers by manufacturer name and model number. You might find a driver provided by Windows that’s not specifically made for your device model but similar enough that it will work. For example, if your laser printer is an Acme 8840n, but Windows only has a driver for an Acme 8840 without the “n,” give it a try.

Managing Virtual Memory To Optimize Pc

Now a Days the application are getting bigger and sophisticated, which in turn require more space and bigger Memory. You might have observed that when you call in your computer repair refers to online computer support one of the troubleshooting steps is increasing the size of Virtual Memory. Now let's have a look at what actually happens. When a user starts opening up the programs one by one he/she experiences the system slows down gradually.

You can simply compare it with a small room filled with 10 people, after sometime the space to breathe reduces and you require more space, similarly the system needs to copy the application data from the Hard Drive into the system memory in order for it to process and run the data. Once the memory gets filled up with data, the system will stop loading the program and might result in PC hang. In this case, either the user can add memory which is expensive or share some space from Hard Drive.

Nearly all the tech support or computer help companies and online computer support or online computer help websites recommends that having too low of Virtual Memory size or large Virtual Memory size is not a good idea. If you set the Virtual Memory too low, then the OS will keep on giving message "Not enough memory or Virtual too low." In order to correct this problem either you can call your computer support company or refer to any of the free articles available on some online computer support website.

If you set the Virtual Memory size too large it will create the performance lagging, and even it will take the HDD free space. Therefore, that is not a good idea. The recommendation by all the computer support companies is that the ideal size for the Virtual Memory is the default size of Virtual Memory, and it should not be exceed the value of the triple size of system memory. You can also find this recommendation on any of online computer support website.

To maintain the good overall system performance, you should be using the default size of actual size for Virtual Memory and the triple the value of the size of the main memory for the maximum size of Virtual Memory. For more information on virtual memory call your computer support company or refer to online computer support services.

Three Reasons Why Your Computer Slows Down

Common Problems Due To Long Use Of Computers

The distribution of weight down our spine and legs is a delicate and important balance. Our heads are very heavy and if our neck is not in the right position a tremendous stress is put on the muscles and joints. When seated in front of a computer we first reduce the normal curve of our lower back ( lord sis) because of the rotation of the pelvic bones and sacrum.

This lordosis is what makes the curve in your lower back and in your neck. The upper back curves the opposite way and is called a hypnosis. When one lordosis is reduced the other must make up for it in order to maintain the balance of the body. The same holds true is one is increased, the other must decrease.

The computer user often finds that their head drifts forward towards the screen. This is due in part by the fatigue of the muscles of the neck but also by the shortening of the pectorals muscles. The peck muscles lie in your chest and are responsible for bringing your upper arm forward and internally rotating the humorous.

Physical changes noted from computer use
• Head forward Posture
• Hunchback
• Rounded Shoulders
• Raised shoulder on one side
• Tilted or rotated head
• One arm appears longer

Three Reasons Why Your Computer Slows Down

Remote Desktop Access

You are due to give a presentation at work on Monday - you have worked all weekend on perfecting it and when you reach office you find to your shock that you forgot to update the file on your USB drive. If you have ever found yourself in a similar situation, you might have wished very hard for access to your computer at home for just a short while to transfer the file.
This is exactly the function performed by Remote Computer support - it helps you to use a computer to connect to another computer over the Internet for file access and for getting information even when the computers are separated by several kilometers.
There are two ways of achieving this - one is to use the Shared file system provided by Windows and the other is to use commercial software with a proprietary system. Remote access need not be confined to file access alone; you can also control the desktop of a computer that has been configured for remote access.

Once your computer has been configured for remote access, you can sit in front of a computer anywhere in the world and use the Internet to work on your computer - of course, the main drawback will be the delay in the response from your computer which would be a function of the distance separating you and your computer and the network speed. Drawbacks aside, the flexibility provided by remote access is enormous and eliminates the need to synchronize files on two different computers.

The level of access provided by remote access depends on the operating systems used on the client machine and the remote computer. If you are using Windows XP on both, the task is simplified as Windows XP comes with inbuilt support for remote access. You can log in to the remote machine using the same credentials you would use while sitting in front of it. Remote access is also secure.

With the remote desktop enabled, you can run programs on the remote computer, edit, save and transfer files between the two systems. Be aware that file transfer may be slow. You can print out documents from the remote computer on the printer connected to the computer where you are working and also hear audio played on the remote computer.

Setting up the remote desktop under Windows XP is simple and access can be initiated by selecting Start->programs->accessories->communications->remote desktop connection. Just type in the IP address of the remote computer in the window that pops up and click on Connect. You can now access the remote desktop. Once you are done, you can log-off from the remote computer to terminate the session.

Basics Of Navigation In Microsoft Outlook

Easy and Fast Navigation - The ability to easily get at my whole, unfiltered Inbox is actually a big problem. Checking what's in the inbox is so ingrained that I've removed it from anything I have easy access to. Instead, I use a filtered list that 0nly shows me mail about which I haven't yet decided if I need to take action. I take a shortcut to this folder and all the other regularly important f0lders and put them onto the Shortcuts area in Outl00k:

To-Do: Tasks + Flagged Mail - Microsoft Outlook 2oo7 support provides a new "virtual folder" called To-Do that will show all Tasks and all Flagged Mail together in one combined list. This is great and is the basis for my GTD implementation.

Search Folders In Outlook - Normally when you look at a folder, you see all the items in it. When I l00k at my Sent Items folder, I see all the mail in Sent Items. When I look at my Inbox I see everything in my Inbox. You've probably noticed that you can create Views on folders that combine filtering, sorting, etc. This lets you, for example, create a view for "all flagged mail that is older than a week" or "all mail to me." I find views OK, but Search Folders are better. With a Search Folder, you can create a new "virtual" folder that has a set of filter criteria defined and it'll look like a folder with only items that match a certain set of criteria. And the results can be pulled from across many folders

Views - 0K, I know I said I prefer Search Folders. Unfortunately, with Outlook you can only have search folders that search for mail items. Because the foundation of my approach takes advantage of the blended treatment of tasks and flagged mail, I can't use Search Folders all the time. In particular, to build filtered ways to look at the To-Do list, I need to use vanilla views.

Complex Filter Criteria - When defining filters for a view or for a search folder, you have probably used the UI that lets you specify various things like when something is due, whether it's flagged, what the categories are, etc. However, if you look closely on this dialog, you'll notice that there's a SQL tab. On this tab you can define very, very advanced queries that let you build more complex filters that are possible on the rest of the tabs. In some of my implementation of GTD, I've had to build some pretty complex queries. The good news is that I've figured them out and I'll just provide you the text to paste into the SQL field.

Custom Toolbars - I like to have quick and easy access with one or two clicks to the actions I use when I'm trying to deal with all of my email and tasks. So I've created a custom toolbar and put certain buttons right on that toolbar for easy access. On my toolbar, I have (from left to right): the categories button, the Flag (Custom) button [with a slightly customized icon], a quick drop-down to show the views available for the current folder (I only use this for the To-Do list) and the Move To button to quickly move items to a folder when I'm organizing and filing things away.

Those are the building blocks. In the next post, I'll describe the basic workflow for Getting Things Done and how I experience Outlook when I use it for this workflow. In the posts after that, I'll describe how to configure all of this in Outlook.

Three Reasons Why Your Computer Slows Down

1) Fragmentation

According to Wikipedia, fragmentation occurs when a piece of data in memory is broken up into many pieces that are not close together. On the hard drive this means that files are broken up into pieces. Because of this it takes more time to read them from the hard drive, which means slow boot times, slow program loading times, and that it takes more time to open a document. In order to speed up a fragmented hard drive, a specific program is used called a defragmenter. Defragmenter rearranges pieces of files on the hard drive in such a way so that the pieces belonging to each file lie contiguously and in the right sequence. Microsoft Windows contains a defragmenter by default, although I would recommend you use something else, because the defragmenter built in Microsoft Windows is too slow, and cannot do some of the things that more advanced defragmenters such as PerfectDisk (my personal favorite) do.

To defragment a hard drive using the Windows Defragmenter, open My Computer, right click on the hard drive you wish to defragment (usually your choice would be the C drive), choose Properties from the menu, in the properties dialog choose the Tools tab and click Defragment Now.

2) Too many programs running.

While we install different programs, some of those programs configure Windows to load them automatically every time we use our computer. Some of those programs are needed (e.g. an antivirus monitor), but others are not.
To remove these programs we can use the tool called MSConfig which comes with Windows. If you're using Vista then to run this tool click the Start button and enter "msconfig" in the search field. If you're using XP click the Start button, choose Run and then enter msconfig in the new window. In the MSConfig window click on the Start Up tab. All of the programs on this list can be removed, however some of them you may need. If you're not sure whether you need a particular program or not, you can check this list, to find out what that program does and whether you need it or not.

3) Errors in the registry

Windows has a central place for storing all of the configuration options called the Windows Registry. Windows Registry is used to store all kinds of configuration options. Things like filetype associations, uninstall information, display settings, configuration options belonging to all of the programs you have installed etc. are all stored inside the Windows Registry. Some of the options can slow down your PC as well. You can use a tool called RegEdit to see all of the settings that are stored inside the registry. You can run it the same way you run MSConfig, that was described earlier. Please don't modify anything though, unless you know what you're doing (in which case you probably don't need to read this article). The only way to check the registry and fix all the errors would be to use a specialized program for that, but unfortunately Windows doesn't provide a tool to do that, so if you still want to cleanup your registry, I would recommend you use a program such as Regis which does a little more then just fix your registry, so it's probably money well spent.

Can we run two different anti-spyware programs at the same time

It's best not to use two different virus removal products at the same time. These tend to operate at a low level within the operating system, which can cause crashes, and the two programs can clash. spyware removal programs operate at a higher level, as spyware was often browser related.

Nowadays, viruses are often distributed online and by fake codec downloads rather than by email, so the virus and spyware fields are merging, which makes mixing programs harder. But you can always try it and see how they get on.

In general, I think it's best to have one antispyware program running all the time, and run a different program from time to time, as a cross-check.

How to optimize your pc

The computers of today can do some miraculous things, but they can also cause an amazing amount of grief when they are not functioning to capacity or are not operating the way they are supposed to. Hopefully it hasn't happened to you, but how many times do we hear of major problems being caused by a single computer taking a dive at the most inopportune time, let alone the frustration felt when you can count the time it takes for your computer to complete very basic tasks.
A slow running, unsteady computer can be cured though and without having to go to major re-formatting lengths. The easiest method for restoring system performance is to carry out a scan of your computer's registry. If your computer is running Windows the operating system relies on a registry to store vital information such as hardware and software configurations, user preferences and setup information. While everything is in order and functioning as it should your computer will be running at optimum speed and stability.
Add a few errors into the equations and things can quickly turn ugly. It is a fact that these registry errors are unavoidable and can be introduced into the system by a number of means. Software that is not written very well can have an adverse affect, viruses and spyware can cause all sorts of registry problems and installing and removing programs can also fill the registry full of invalid entries, missing files and programs which can cause system performance and stability to drop considerably.
The answer to this problem can be found in the form of registry repair software. Most programs will first carry out a scan of your computer system and give you a report of where any problems are found. Once the scan is complete the program can then go and clean up the entire registry and return the system to optimal speed and provide a nice stable operating system. The benefits of this software can be easily seen in getting through your work (or play!) faster and not being constantly worried about losing important information should your computer decide to take an early holiday.

Windows 7 Review

Last night finally i get along with my windows 7 experience, but don't know why was it only me who has got discouraged or their are some of more their in my followers list, surely there would be..

On a first impression it only seems as if windows 7 is just a vista make over nothing more than that and has just grown some what more complex then vista rather then summing up

Once again Microsoft has moved stuff around in the User Interface. After baffling its loyal users by completely changing the XP User Interface, So it started moving stuff, with the Control Panel taking the brunt of the abuse. Need to add a printer? Welcome to the new "Devices and Printers" applet! Looking for the "System and Maintenance" subgroup? It now has a new name: "System and Security." And can you guess where the Security subgroup went? No? Then it's time for some retraining!

System performance: with the same hardware requirements as vista it seemed as if Microsoft might have some thing to be patted for as with each of their releases a common history is the hardware requirement needs rises the bar of hardware cost. But sorry to comment some thing as 7 us as slow as vista, In fact, Windows 7's performance is virtually identical to that of Microsoft windows Vista SP1 on the same hardware. If you were unhappy with Vista's CPU-hogging, memory-sucking ways, Windows 7 will provide little relief.

Computer Desktop Support Services

Computer support services are a large gamut of services offering help with technology products such as mobile phones, televisions, computers, or other electronic or mechanical goods. In general, computer support services try to help computer users decipher different problems associated with products.
Generally, manufacturers offer technical support along with products they sell, either freely available or for a fee after the given warranty or guarantee period. With growing advancements in technology, users can nowadays gain technical support over telephone or via various online media such as e-mail or chat. Corporate regularly keep internal technical support available to their staff for computer related problem. However, this seems to be a little difficult for small businesses because of lack of resources and capital.
Internet has emerged as an excellent source for computer desktop support services, where experienced technicians may provide advice and assistance with problems. They simply charge a nominal fee but offer a complete array of required quality support services.
Computer support services may be delivered by different technologies depending on the situation. For example, you can address your software problems can be fixed over the telephone; while more complicated problems can be solved using online computer support.

Desktop Computer Shopping Tips

Online shoppers can bank a lot of money and avoid needless hassle by following these tips before going for a Computer Desktop Support . First consider the warranty and technical support offered by the seller. Because most PC problems tend to occur in the first year, a one-year warranty becomes very vital indeed. A two-or three-year warranty will add about very little to your overall cost. Businesses can get a hold of options like 24-hour on-site response, but the cost involved will be slightly on a higher scale. Therefore, users must focus on which PC maker offers the best technical support besides warranty service. Most PC makers provide a gamut of service; therefore you can get and pay for the level of service you require.
Do not buy extra software unless you really need it. Buy an OS, and office suite, and of course an antivirus software. But if you want probably more than that, then look for vendors' software bundles for upgrading your software. you can regularly upgrade from Works Suite or a parallel package to a full office suite like Office XP Small Business Edition adding great value keeping in mind the fact that Office XP can add some additional cost.
Don't get lost in search of surfing price reductions. If you require a new PC now, don't wait for several months to see whether prices will go down further and if upper-end performance will enhance. Some shoppers find themselves getting stuck in an endless price-drop waiting game. Instead, you make up your mind when you require the system and go for it.
Purchase above minimum level of specification for the longer useful life span. If longevity is precedence and if you can pay for it, get something nearer to, but just below the current top of the level. This will pull out the useful life of your PC system.
Check out an LCD monitor's interface. Depending on the brand or model of LCD monitor, it could possess one of several interface connectors - the part that plugs into your PC. These include the proverbial VGA and the finer DVI connectors. If you are purchasing non-bundled display, ensure it will operate with the system you require or that includes at least a money-back guarantee.
Upgrade at the time when you buy the system. Often, you can get a hold of a good deal on a larger hard drive or a better monitor when you go for the first order of your computer support. Even going for upgraded size of a hard drive may add very little to the overall cost, and upgrading to a higher-quality monitor may be inexpensive.

Why Small Business Needs A Desktop Support Professional

I am constantly surprised at the state of computer systems found in most small businesses networks. Why is this so? Small business owners often find themselves in a state where they need to do everything. They are their own IT person, writer or even delivery person. Sometimes they have had their next-door neighbor setup up their peer-to-peer network. Maybe they had a computer person set things up then tried to keep up the network on their own. There are many reasons. What it all adds up to is you have a network with many security problems and poor performance.
Poor performance can lead to lost productivity due to lost data or hardware and software problems. If every time you start MS Word it takes five minutes to open up, and you open it four times per day, you could lose as much as twenty minutes per day. That is over 120 hours per year for just one application!
A system heavily infected with adware and spyware can easily take this long to startup or shutdown programs, if it does not crash frequently. Since adware and spyware authors do not care if your PC crashes, they tend to write sloppy programs that cause problems when they interact with legitimate applications.
The security side can be even more problematic. Do you maintain customer data on your network? If you do, you may have a legal responsibility to safeguard that data. Failure to do so could open your business up to litigation. We all know how lawsuit happy Americans have become.
So what do you do?
Do what the big companies do, turn the problem over to your IT department and make them solve the problem.
You do not have an IT department. Well you could call George, the guy who setup your network in the first place. George is the “computer technician” who failed to setup your network security, when he created your network.
I like George; he gives me a lot of business fixing problems he leaves behind.
One of the advantages of having your own IT department is they become familiar with your operations and can quickly resolve any problems that pop up.
How can you take advantage of having your own IT staff? Hire an IT support company for the service. I know “outsourcing” is a dirty word these days, but if you think about it small businesses have always benefited from outsourcing.
Why contract for your IT support? One reason is you may not have a need for a fulltime onsite technician. If you only have a need for a technician ten hours a week, do you want to pay for a full forty hours?
To protect yourself and maintain a professional relationship with your support company always insist on a service contract. This contract defines the responsibilities of both parties.
Your service contract should cover the following aspects:
Service Level Agreement
This is the performance standard you use to measure the response you receive from your support company. For instance, my company typically offers three levels of service level agreements. Each level costs a different amount based on the timeliness of service. If you contract for a four-hour response, you are guaranteed a technician on-site in less than four hours. A twelve-hour SLA would have a technician on-site in less than twelve hours. Naturally, the quicker the response the more the costs. This can work in your favor if you can afford to wait a little while for support.
On-site Support
This is when a technician is dispatched to your location and should be considered the minimum level of service.
Technical Support
Telephone technical support offers your business two big incentives, quicker resolution and lower costs. Phone technical support can return your employees to a productive state faster than On-site support.
This should be included in the contract. Some companies consider it an add-on and charge an additional fee.
Additional Services
Since the goal of contracting for your IT support is to provide your business with the maximum benefit, for the least cost, consider including these additional services
Acceptable Use Policies

Project Management

Network Security

Network Design and Development

Remote Office Support
The more complete the services provided by your support company, the better off your company will be.
Here is a sample package that is popular with my customers.
A yearly mutually renewable contract that may be terminated on sixty days written notice by either party. Stipulating a twelve-hour SLA and limited phone technical support.
Included in the project initiation package is an Acceptable Use Agreement that has to be signed by all employees. This is a precondition to finalization of the service contract. An acceptable use policy defines the actions that may and may not be taken on your network. This helps protect you from wrongdoing by your employees.
The way my technicians service our contracts is to attempt to give the customer a four-hour or better response regardless of the contracted SLA. Our technical phone support goal is to contact the customer in less then 30 minutes.
Since this is a service agreement, my technicians, as a minimum, spend one entire day per month at the client’s office maintaining the network environment.

Things To Consider When Buying A Desktop

Desktop computers are designed to be stationary and upgradeable. Having the right set of computer gives the advantage in gaming, Internet browsing, document processing, and other work done through the help of computers. We have here a check list of what to look for in order for you to be able to purchase the best computer that can meet your requirements.
First thing to judge is the platform or basically the type of environment a desktop pc can support. Two of the most competing operating system platforms today are Mac and PC. Mac computers are known for its impregnability to computer viruses, but software support from third party makers are limited or less. On the other hand, PC platform runs great on computers, but due to its popularity it becomes a perfect prey for malicious computer users. It is reported that computers supporting PC platform including computers running with Windows operating systems are prone to computer viruses.
Processor speed is a fundamental factor when choosing a desktop. Users must always remember that contemporary software applications no longer support slower computer processors such as those earlier releases by Pentium and AMD and other processor manufacturers.
The motherboard is another component a buyer must consider. Common motherboards of today have built in audio, video, and local area network (LAN) ports. These are very important components of a motherboard and should be considered when checking. In addition, it is necessary to inquire if the motherboard can support future upgrade. Questions like the maximum amount of RAM and the type of hard drive it can support are among the most important inquiry. Newer desktop support uk both IDE and SATA hard drives. Ports including USB 2.0, gaming ports, and standard PS2 ports should also be supported.
Memory (RAM) and Hard Disk Drives are among the components that must be checked when buying a desktop. Software applications today require huge amount of storage space and main memory in order for it to be properly installed and configured. SATA hard drives are the most popular type or modern day hard drive. These are capable of holding data up to 160GB of bigger.
An additional Optical drive will make the computer more valuable. Modern optical drives are now released with DVD and CD compatibility. These drives allow a user to create backups of important files in DVD or CD formats. Combo drives are better than ordinary optical drives that are only capable of reading data from a compact disk.

Slow Computers

Slow computers are never an positive feature to a company. I've seen offices with inexpensive computers and poorly managed networks that have become spam zombie nets and only serve to hackers and virus writers. Customers waiting for programs to load or documents to process wastes precious time that relates straight to production and income down the line.
Many services I do usually amount to simple maintenance tasks IT departments fail or do not have the funds to adress. Users in the field are not always capable to return their systems to the office when it fails and this often causes lost productivity.
Contact our service and ask what I can provide for you that is inexpensive and not a competely outsourced IT solution. We're focused on simply keeping the company running and performin the leg work most IT firms do not have interest in performing. Instead of spending $5000 plus on all new systems we optimize systems you already own to save money. Give us a call. A little investment in your computer hardware can make for a much needed boost in revue down the road.

Shopping Tips for Desktop PC

Online shoppers can save a lot of money and stay away from needless harass by following these tips before going for a Desktop PC. First judge the warranty and technical support presented by the seller. Because most PC problems tend to happen in the first year, a one-year warranty becomes very important indeed. A two-or three-year warranty will add about very little to your overall cost. Do not buy additional software unless you dearly need it. purchase an operating system, an office suite, and of course an antivirus package. But if you need more than that, then look for vendors' software bundles for upgrading your software. For as diminutive as $100, you can regularly upgrade from Microsoft Works Suite or a parallel package to a full office suite like Microsoft Office XP Small Business Edition adding great value keeping in mind the fact that Office XP can add some additional cost. Check out for connectivity up front. Many PCs now give a pair of USB ports on the front of case; therefore you can connect multiple peripherals without having to fight around in back. If this is very important to you, search for PCs with up-front FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports, USB 2.0 ports, audio and video connectors.
