Exactly how much faster? Mr. Hernandez goes on to say that the time it takes to upgrade to Windows 7 “is faster or equal within a 5% threshold to the Vista SP1 upgrade time.” In practical terms, this means that “clean, high-end hardware” users should expect upgrade times of 30 to 35 minutes, while “super users” — defined as having midrange to high-end software — may need to set aside a maximum of 1,220 minutes for upgrading.

If you still think someone is spying on you, here’s what you can do! The good thing right now is that neither Windows XP SP2 nor Windows Vista support multiple concurrent connections while someone is logged into the console (there is a hack for this, but I would not worry about). What this means is that if you’re logged into your XP or Vista computer (like you are now if you’re reading this), and someone were to connect to it using the BUILT-IN REMOTE DESKTOP feature of Windows, your screen would become locked and it would tell tell you who is connected. So why is that useful? It’s useful because it means that in order for someone to connect to YOUR session without you noticing or your screen being taken over, they have use third-party software and it’s a lot easier to detect third-party software than a normal process in Windows.
So now we’re looking for third-party software, which is usually referred to as remote control software or virtual network computing (VNC) software. First, the easy thing to do is to simply check in your Start Menu All Programs and check whether or not something like VNC, RealVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC, LogMeIn, GoToMyPC, etc is installed. A lot of times IT people are sloppy and figure that a normal user won’t know what a piece of software is and will simply ignore it. If any of those programs are installed, then someone can connect to your computer without you knowing it as long as the program is running in the background as a Windows service.
That brings us to the second point. Usually, if one of the above listed programs are installed, there will be an icon for it in the task bar because it needs to be constantly running to work.
Check all of your icons (even the hidden ones) and see what is running. If you find something you’ve not heard of, do a quick Google search to see what pops up. It’s usually quite hard to remove something from the taskbar, so if there is something installed to monitor your computer, it should be there.
However, if someone really sneaky installed it and nothing shows up there, you can try another way. 11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. You have gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel
12. Now remove or change your password as you prefer. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password. Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

Almost every user that comes into the office with a virus infected computer asks how does it happen. It used to be so easy to explain. Well you are going to those websites, or you are unlawfully downloading music, or even opened an email that said, "you have won dollar one thousand or whatever the cause was.
Not so any longer. Those things are still around, but now the age of embedded viruses in regular ol mainstream websites. Hackers get into websites and can put viruses right on the webpage, and it can load onto your computer. Some ads recently have even been found to contain viruses.
Remember it is important to keep current
Anti virus software on your computer and make sure it is doing a weekly scan, and that it is scanning your email and internet usage. Using IE-8 is not a bad idea. I have gotten past the newness and problems it originally had, but there are some really good security features in it.
Also, be careful of what you search for, and when you go there, be careful of the domain you are going to. The domain is the last part before the .com or .net or whatever the website is.
For example, if you are looking for www.ford .com the ford.com is the domain. Sometimes the link will look like
If you see a link like that, the actual domain is joeblow.com, the last letters between the dots. It looks like ford, because ford is in the name. But the important part of the website address is the .com and the letters preceding that. None of the other parts of that website matter, and it is definitely not a ford motor company website.
In this screen shot of IE-8, notice how the domain is in bold, and since it is a secure site, the lock is showing and it is telling you it is the verified BofA site.
Be careful on what sites you go to. Take an extra couple seconds to look up at the address bar and see what domain you are really on. Some of the internet browsers, IE8, Firefox, have the domain highlighted now so you can tell right where you are at.
Also, when you do searches on things, the hackers go out and find what searches are the most popular. Jo-lo, Lindsey Lohan, Obama, whatever is being searched for.
They will put up bogus webpage's that will go to the top of the search engine, and they are infected sites.

Flash drives, thumb drives, memory sticks, are all basically the same thing, a very small device that stores stuff. This is really the replacement for the outdated floppy disk, that would not even hold one current high quality digital photo!
You can store many Gigabytes of information on a Flash Drive, and stick it in your pocket or purse, and hit the road. You can plug it in any USB port on any other computer and read the information. These little babies are pretty slick and very handy.
There are many brands and a few of the top ones are Corsair, SanDisk, Kingston, OCZ, Transcend, and a host of others. The prices range from $5 to over $100. Basically you pay for more space. You can find 1GB drives starting at $5 and for a 64 GB you can pay over $100.
To put things in perspective, a 10 Mega pixel photo is about 3 Megabyte large, so a 1 GB Flash drive will hold 300+ photos at the 10 MP size. 16GB Drives will hold about 4500+ photos.
The important thing to remember is that Flash Drives are temporary storage, they are erasable and not permanent. They are NOT for archiving or permanently backing things up. A more stable medium such as CDs or DVDs should be used for long term storage and safe backups.
One last important point on these drives, is that you can copy virus infected files to them if you have a virus infected computer. The good thing is that if you have a good antivirus program on the computer you are plugging in the USB drive to, it should catch any viruses before they get to the other computer. One more reason to ALWAYS have good, up to date Anti-Virus software.
One other important note that can really throw you for a loop is the U3 drives. If you get a U3 Drive it will say so on the package and it might even cost a little more than a standard Flash drive.
The U3 drive does something neat, it allows you to put a software program on your Flash Drive, and run it on other computers, without installing the software on the other computer. This is nice, but most people don’t need this feature, and never use it.
The HUGE problem is that the Flash Drive installs the U3 software installs on your computer as soon as you plug it in, and it is very rude stuff. It acts like it is taking over your system. I highly recommend not buying one of these drives, unless you really need it.

If you examine the cable connecting the printer to your computer, chances are you’ll find a 36-pin Getronics connector on the end attached to the printer and a 26-pin D-type connector attached to the parallel port of your computer, which is called the printer port or LPT port.
The default printer port for most software is usually LPT1. If there are multiple parallel ports in your machine, they will be designated LPT1, LPT2, and so on.
There have been several enhancements to the capabilities of the parallel port since the days of the IBM XT machines. The original ports were unidirectional, which meant that they could send data but couldn’t receive it. They could, however, receive status information from the printer. These signals—such as paper out, busy, or error—control the flow of data to the printer.
Your printer has a data buffer that receives the data from the computer and supplies it to the printer at a rate that the printer can accept. The signals from the printer to the parallel port turn on and off this flow of data.
Each of the 26 conductors on your printer cable is important to the proper operation of your printer. A bad cable can produce all sorts of strange printing problems.
If you have a late-model computer with a parallel port that supports ECP/EPP modes and you use a modern, fast printer that can take advantage of it, be sure to connect them with a high-quality IEEE 1284 compliant cable. 1. Restart the PC. The NTLDR error could be a fluke.
2. Check your floppy and optical (CD/DVD) drives for media. Often times, the "NTLDR is Missing" error will appear if your PC is trying to boot to a non-bootable floppy disk or CD/DVD.
3. Check the hard drive and other drive settings in BIOS and ensure they are correct. The BIOS configuration tells the computer how to use a drive so incorrect settings can cause problems, including NTLDR errors.
4. Restore the NTLDR and ntdetect.com files from the Windows XP CD. Restoring these two important system files from the original Windows XP CD may do the trick.
5. Repair or replace the boot.ini file. This will prevent the NTLDR error if the cause of the problem is a boot.ini file that is not configured properly for your Windows XP installation.
6. Write a new partition boot sector to the Windows XP system partition. If the partition boot sector has become corrupt or isn't properly configured, you may receive the "NTLDR is Missing" error.
7. Repair the Windows XP master boot record. NTLDR error messages may also appear if the master boot record is corrupt.
8. Reseat all internal data and power cables. NTLDR error messages could be caused by loose or malfunctioning IDE cables.
Try replacing the IDE cable cable if you suspect it might be faulty.
9. Update your motherboard's BIOS. Occasionally, an outdated BIOS version can cause the "NTLDR is Missing" error.
10. Perform a repair installation of Windows XP. This type of installation should replace any missing or corrupt files. Continue troubleshooting if this does not resolve the issue.
11. Perform a clean installation of Windows XP. This type of installation will completely remove Windows XP from your PC and install it again from scratch. While this will almost certainly resolve any NTLDR errors, it is a time consuming process due to the fact that all of your data must be backed up and then later restored.
If you can't gain access to your files to back them up, understand that you will lose them all if you continue with a clean installation of Windows XP.
12. Replace the hard drive and then perform a new installation of Windows XP. If all else has failed, including the clean installation from the last step, you're most likely facing a hardware issue with your hard drive.

If the RC is any indication (and it should be), then Windows 7 will be a nice upgrade for any Windows user. The new Operating System, however, is a gigantic step up for net book users. Vista is notoriously poorly suited to net books; a pram resource hog that subjects its users to incessant dialog boxes and requires far too many clicks to perform basic tasks, it's kind of a nightmare to use on a 9.0 inch laptop with a 1.50 inch track pad.
Windows XP has been given a boost by notebooks, as its system requirements—more-or-less decided in 2001—are more in line with the specs hardware like the Eee PC and Mini nine. But let's face it: XP is almost ten year old.
Hence, Windows 7. It's noticeably faster than Vista on low-spec machines, properly optimised for netbook hardware, and, most importantly, free (for now). Thing is, installation isn't quite as easy as it is on a regular PC—in fact, it can be a pain in the ass: netbooks don't have DVD drives, which means you've either got to get your hands on an external drive or boot from a USB stick for a clean install. Furthermore, smaller SSDs, like the 8GB units in popular versions of the Dell Mini 9 and Acer Aspire One, make a default installation impossible, or at least impractically tight. Luckily, there are simple methods to deal with both of these problems. Let's get started.
What You'll Need
• A netbook (Minimum 1GB of RAM, 8GB storage space)
• A 4GB or larger USB drive
• A Windows 7 RC Image (details below)
• A Windows XP/Vista PC or a Mac to prepare the flash drive
• For low-end netbooks, lots (and lots) of time
Getting Windows 7
Downloading Windows 7 is a piece of cake. Just navigate to this page and download the 32-bit version. You'll need to get a free Windows Live ID if you don't already have one, but this takes about two minutes.
Microsoft will then give you your very own Windows 7 Licence key, valid until June 1st of next year. (Although after March 1st, it'll drive you to the edge of sanity by shutting off every two hours. But that's a different story, and March is a long way off). Microsoft will then offer up your ISO through a nifty little download manager applet, complete with a "resume" function. There are ways to sidestep this, but don't: you'd be surprised how hard it is to keep a single HTTP connection alive for long enough to download a 2.36GB file.
Preparing Your Flash Drive
This is the annoying part, but it's not necessarily that difficult. Here are some guides, by OS (some linked for length):
• Windows XP
• Windows Vista
• Mac OS X (courtesy of Ubuntu, funnily enough):
1. Open a Terminal (under Utilities)
2. Run diskutil list and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2)
3. Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN (replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2)
4. Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.iso of=/dev/diskN bs=1m (replace /path/to/downloaded.iso with the path where the image file is located; for example, ./windows7.iso)
5. Run diskutil eject /dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes (this can take a few hours on slower drives)
As some commenters have pointed out, you can also make a flash drive bootable with utilities like LiveUSB Helper. Once you've done this, you can mount your Windows 7 ISO with a utility like DaemonTools Lite (For Windows) or MountMe (for Mac), and just copy over all the files to your newly-bootable drive.
Starting Your Install
Ok! Now you've got a bootable flash drive, and you're ready to start installing. It should go without saying, but once you start this process, you'll lose all existing data on your netbook, so you should back up any important files before going through with anything from here forward.
Insert your USB drive and reboot your netbook. As soon as your BIOS screen flashes, you should see instructions for a) changing your netbook's boot order or b) entering its BIOS setup. In the first situation, simply assign the USB drive as the first boot device. In the second, navigate through your BIOS settings until you find a "Default Boot Order" page, and do the same thing there.
From there, you should see the first Windows 7 installation screens. Anyone with a 16GB or larger storage device in their netbook can just follow the instructions until the installation completes, and skip the next step.
If your SSD is smaller than 16GB, or if you just want to save some space, do what they say, but only until the first reboot. After the Windows 7 installer has restarted your computer, you'll need to modify the boot order again. Do not allow installation to continue! Manually change the boot order to prioritize the USB drive again, just as you did at the beginning of the installation.
Compression!
Once the Windows 7 installer has copied most of its system files to your drive, you're going to tighten them up with Windows' trusty old "Compact" command. Here's what you do, as described by Electronic Pulp:

Answer: The User Account Control characteristic called Secure Desktop is what's giving you a problem. To ensure that malware can't interfere with the UAC dialog, it puts the system on hold until you respond to the UAC prompt. Some systems, like mine, go entirely black for a moment before coming back in secure desktop mode. Others, like yours, take a long time to enter that mode.
The Windows 7 release candidate gives you more control over how UAC works. Where Vista just has On and Off, Windows 7 defines four levels of UAC security. Changing it from the third level (the default) down to the second does one specific thing - it disables use of secure mode. The control dialog has a message: "Not recommended. Choose this only if it takes a long time to dim the desktop on your computer". That indicates that Microsoft recognizes the problem.
As it turns out, you can exercise this level of control in Vista too, just with a little more effort. In a non-Home edition, you'd first launch Local Security Policy (type "security" at the Start menu to find it). You'd open Local Policies in the list and choose Security Options. You'd double-click the policy "User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation" and set it to Disabled.
However, you're using a Home edition and hence don't have the handy Local Security Policy applet. So you'll do it differently. Click Start and launch REGEDIT. Navigate to the Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. Right-click in the right-hand pane and choose New | DWORD Value from the popup menu. Name the value PromptOnSecureDesktop and make sure it's data is set to 0. In my experience this change takes effect immediately.
This tweak does reduce your security. The whole dim-screen secure desktop thing is devised so no malicious application could fake a click on "Continue". I don't know of any malware that attempts this sort of attack. It would be semi-pointless since the vast majority of Vista systems haven't been tweaked to remove secure desktop. And of course it would be an ineffective attack under a Standard account, since it would have to somehow obtain and enter your password

1. Keep your PC clean

Double-click the downloaded file to install the driver. (If the device is built into a chip on a motherboard, such as a hard drive controller, look on the motherboard vendor’s site for drivers for that particular chip on that particular board. If it’s a graphics card, the maker of the GPU/VPU chip, such as ATI or Nvidia, will probably have more recent drivers than the card vendor.)
2) If you can’t find driver downloads on the manufacturer’s site, or the site itself, look for the driver that came with the device, if applicable. For example, if your laser printer is an Acme 8840n, but Windows only has a driver for an Acme 8840 without the “n,” give it a try.
