There's a simple way to speed up XP startup: make your system do a boot defragment, which will put all the boot files next to one another on your hard disk. When boot files are in close proximity to one another, your system will start faster.

Empty the cache

The first thing to do when Internet Explorer is misbehaving is empty your Internet Explorer cache. Often the cache is not corrupt or damaged – it is simply too large.

1. Click Tools, then Internet Options, and then click the Delete Files button.

2. A Delete Files window will appear. Select the option to Delete all offline content, and then click OK.

3. Click Settings and reduce the size of your cache to, say, 50 to 100 MB (more if you routinely download very large files).

This will invariably fix the dreaded red x, View, Source, and sometimes "Page cannot be displayed" errors.

Troubleshooting fix number 1—empty your IE cache.

Emptying the cache will not be sufficient to fix things if a hidden file in the cache folders, called index.dat, is corrupt. Our best alternative in such a situation is to delete the cache folders in their entirety, but this cannot be done from within Windows under normal circumstances.

Index.dat is a system file, and any attempt to delete it while Windows is running or while the user is logged on will be blocked. Therefore, we need to reboot into DOS mode or, when running later versions of Windows that support user accounts, we need to log in to Windows using a different Administrator account to that which is affected.

Note: The following procedure is for advanced users.

If you are running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

1. Click on Start, then Shut Down, and select the Restart the Computer in MS-DOS mode option. (If you are running Windows Me use a Windows 98 startup disc to access DOS mode.)

The steps required to create a startup disk are the same for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me.

1. Click on Start, point to Settings, and then click on Control Panel.

2. Open Add/Remove Programs, click on the Startup Disk tab, and then click Create Disk and follow the prompts. Make sure you have an empty floppy disk ready.

If you have difficulties when using Add/Remove Programs to create a startup disk (for example, if the Wizard prompts for your operating system installation disk and you cannot find it, or you only have a manufacturer provided restore disk or partition) go to www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm. Download a Windows98 boot disk executable file from that site, put an empty floppy disk in the correct disk drive, and then double click on the downloaded file to make the disk. I recommend Windows 98 SE Custom, which includes smartdrv.

Turn your PC off, and place the startup disk in the computer’s floppy drive. Turn on your PC, which should read the startup disk and load the DOS operating system instead of Windows.

Once the system has finished booting into DOS mode, run the following commands from the Windows directory, typically displayed in DOS as c:\windows\>.

I should explain what tempor~1 means. The version of DOS that is included on the Windows 98 startup disk does not support long file or folder names like "temporary internet files." We are restricted to 8 letters only. Therefore, any file or folder which has more than eight letters to its name must shortened, and appended with ~1 when use the Windows 98 version of DOS.

If you are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP

We do things differently when working with operating systems that support User Accounts, such as Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Firstly, Windows 98 boot disks do not work if a hard drive is formatted as NTFS instead of FAT . Secondly, Windows 2000 and Windows XP use a more complicated directory structure than Windows 95 and Windows 98, making DOS more difficult to use successfully.

The path to the Internet Explorer cache directory will typically be something similar to:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\...

Thankfully, Windows 2000 and Windows XP users can log in using an Administrator account to delete the folders in question directly from within Windows Explorer. Note that an Administrator cannot delete his own Internet Explorer cache folders. He must log on using a different Administrator account.
Edit the HOST file

Note: The following procedure is for advanced users.

The HOSTS file is a hidden file used by some Internet related programs to control Web browsing by directly linking particular Web sites to pre-set IP addresses. The only problem is, if a Web page's IP address changes, the HOSTS file will not update itself to suit, causing "Page cannot be displayed" errors.

The HOSTS file can be viewed and edited using Notepad, but first we must temporarily show hidden files.

For Windows XP

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.

For older systems

1. Double-click My Computer, click View, and then click Folder Options.

2. On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders, and then clear the Hide protected operating system files check box.

Find and edit your HOSTS file

The correct directory for a HOSTS file depends on what version of Windows you are running:

Windows XP = C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc
Windows 2K = C:\Winnt\System32\Drivers\Etc
Win 98\ME = C:\Windows

Once you have found your HOSTS file, right-click on the HOSTS file, and then select Open. You will be asked to choose a program to use. Select Notepad, but make sure you that you do NOT turn on any option to always use the same program.

Examine the content of your HOSTS file, and compare it to the screenshot below. We do not need to worry about any line that begins with an # because is ignored by Windows. Also, the line "127.0.0.1 localhost" can be safely ignored, because it is a standard entry.

A HOSTS file can be used to control Web page to IP address associations

Anything else that appears in your HOSTS file without an # at the beginning, apart from the "127.0.0.1 localhost" line, should be viewed with suspicion when we are trying to diagnose the cause of "Page cannot be displayed" errors. The quickest way to test for HOSTS file involvement is to right click the HOSTS file, then select Rename. Add the letter X to the beginning or end of the file name and then ok your changes. By changing the name of the HOSTS file, we stop Internet Explorer from using it, and therefore resolve any issues caused by the file.
Repair Layered Service Provider problems

Sometimes Internet Explorer is unable to access the Internet if software known as Layered Service Provider (LSP) has been removed incorrectly from a computer. You might not know you have this software; it is sometimes installed by unrelated software such as file-sharing programs, without your knowledge. In such cases, you will need to run LSPfix or Winsockxpfix. As its name suggests, Winsockxpfix should only be used on machines running Windows XP. LSPfix can be used on all other consumer versions of Windows, but make sure that Winsock 2 has been installed on Windows 95 machines.

A lot of times IT people are sloppy and figure that a normal user won’t know what a piece of software is and will simply ignore it. If any of those programs are installed, then someone can connect to your computer without you knowing it as long as the program is running in the background as a Windows service.

That brings us to the second point. Usually, if one of the above listed programs are installed, there will be an icon for it in the task bar because it needs to be constantly running to work.

Check all of your icons (even the hidden ones) and see what is running. If you find something you’ve not heard of, do a quick Google search to see what pops up. It’s usually quite hard to remove something from the taskbar, so if there is something installed to monitor your computer, it should be there.

However, if someone really sneaky installed it and nothing shows up there, you can try another way. Again, because these are third-party apps, they have to connect to Windows XP or Vista on different communication ports. Ports are simply a virtual data connection by which computers share information directly. As you may already know, XP and Vista come with a built-in Firewall that blocks many of the incoming ports for security reasons. If you’re not running an FTP site, why should your port 23 be open, right?

So in order for these third-party apps to connect to your computer, they must come through a port, which has to be open on your computer. You can check all the open ports by going to Start, Control Panel, and Windows Firewall.

Click on the Exceptions tab and you’ll see see a list of programs with check boxes next to them. The ones that are checked are “open” and the unchecked or unlisted ones are “closed”. Go through the list and see if there is a program you’re not familiar with or that matches VNC, remote control, etc. If so, you can block the program by un-checking the box for it!

The only other way I can think of to see if someone is connected to your computer is to see if there are any processes running under a different name! If you go to the Windows Task Manager (press Cntr + Shift + Esc together) and go to the Processes tab, you’ll see a column titled User Name.

Scroll through all the processes and you should only see your user name, Local Service, Network Service, and System. Anything else means someone is logged into the computer!

You can follow microsoft windows xp support. But if you don’t have a “password reset disk” you have to follow this method:

1. With your Windows XP CD in the cd-rom drive and boot your computer

2. Press any key when you read “Press any key to boot from cd” on the screen

3. The first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting the system hardware and loading files

4. When you get to the Welcome screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now

5. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement

6. The next screen gives you the option to start a Computer Repair process. Use the arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process

7. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes. Shortly after this stage you will be required to reboot

8. During the reboot do not press any key to boot from the CD again. Setup will resume automatically with the standard screen

10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen. When you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. A command console will now open up giving you a wide access to the system

11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. You have gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel

12. Now remove or change your password as you prefer. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password. Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

1. Read the book. I cannot begin to tell you how many people have brought their printer to my shop with the User Manual and paid my wife (no computer expert) DOLLAR 29.50 to sit-down, read the book, and fix the printer. Unfortunately, some printer books aren't worth reading...

2. Check the manufacturer's web site. The problem you are having has most likely happened before. If the manufacturer has a good web site, you may find the answer there and save a lot of time, money, and frustration. Go to your Manufacturer Links page to get printer support

3. Is it plugged-in? Make sure the printer is plugged into a live outlet. If it is plugged into a surge protector, make sure it is on. Try moving it from the surge protector to a known-good wall outlet.

4. Is it on? Ok, you can't print and Windows, etc. says it can't find the printer. Make sure the darn thing is turned on and there are no error lights (LEDs) lit. If there are error lights, refer to the user manual/manufacturer's web site. You should hear the print mechanism initialize when power is applied and most printers have at least one light which will be illuminated when it is on.

Sneaky Viruses Hidden in Ads and Web Pages

Almost every user that comes into the office with a virus infected computer asks how does it happen. It used to be so easy to explain. Well you are going to those websites, or you are unlawfully downloading music, or even opened an email that said, "you have won dollar one thousand or whatever the cause was.

Not so any longer. Those things are still around, but now the age of embedded viruses in regular ol mainstream websites. Hackers get into websites and can put viruses right on the webpage, and it can load onto your computer. Some ads recently have even been found to contain viruses.
Remember it is important to keep current Anti virus software on your computer and make sure it is doing a weekly scan, and that it is scanning your email and internet usage. Using IE-8 is not a bad idea. I have gotten past the newness and problems it originally had, but there are some really good security features in it.

Also, be careful of what you search for, and when you go there, be careful of the domain you are going to. The domain is the last part before the .com or .net or whatever the website is.
For example, if you are looking for www.ford .com the ford.com is the domain. Sometimes the link will look like

If you see a link like that, the actual domain is joeblow.com, the last letters between the dots. It looks like ford, because ford is in the name. But the important part of the website address is the .com and the letters preceding that. None of the other parts of that website matter, and it is definitely not a ford motor company website.

In this screen shot of IE-8, notice how the domain is in bold, and since it is a secure site, the lock is showing and it is telling you it is the verified BofA site.

Be careful on what sites you go to. Take an extra couple seconds to look up at the address bar and see what domain you are really on. Some of the internet browsers, IE8, Firefox, have the domain highlighted now so you can tell right where you are at.

Also, when you do searches on things, the hackers go out and find what searches are the most popular. Jo-lo, Lindsey Lohan, Obama, whatever is being searched for.
They will put up bogus webpage's that will go to the top of the search engine, and they are infected sites.

Some Helpful Information on Flash Drives

Flash drives, thumb drives, memory sticks, are all basically the same thing, a very small device that stores stuff. This is really the replacement for the outdated floppy disk, that would not even hold one current high quality digital photo!

You can store many Gigabytes of information on a Flash Drive, and stick it in your pocket or purse, and hit the road. You can plug it in any USB port on any other computer and read the information. These little babies are pretty slick and very handy.

There are many brands and a few of the top ones are Corsair, SanDisk, Kingston, OCZ, Transcend, and a host of others. The prices range from $5 to over $100. Basically you pay for more space. You can find 1GB drives starting at $5 and for a 64 GB you can pay over $100.

To put things in perspective, a 10 Mega pixel photo is about 3 Megabyte large, so a 1 GB Flash drive will hold 300+ photos at the 10 MP size. 16GB Drives will hold about 4500+ photos.

The important thing to remember is that Flash Drives are temporary storage, they are erasable and not permanent. They are NOT for archiving or permanently backing things up. A more stable medium such as CDs or DVDs should be used for long term storage and safe backups.

One last important point on these drives, is that you can copy virus infected files to them if you have a virus infected computer. The good thing is that if you have a good antivirus program on the computer you are plugging in the USB drive to, it should catch any viruses before they get to the other computer. One more reason to ALWAYS have good, up to date Anti-Virus software.

One other important note that can really throw you for a loop is the U3 drives. If you get a U3 Drive it will say so on the package and it might even cost a little more than a standard Flash drive.

The U3 drive does something neat, it allows you to put a software program on your Flash Drive, and run it on other computers, without installing the software on the other computer. This is nice, but most people don’t need this feature, and never use it.

The HUGE problem is that the Flash Drive installs the U3 software installs on your computer as soon as you plug it in, and it is very rude stuff. It acts like it is taking over your system. I highly recommend not buying one of these drives, unless you really need it.

I have a link to a good site that talks about how to remove the feature from your Flash Drive. You can download a little program that will erase the software from the Flash drive, so you do not have to deal with it.

There are several ways to create new documents, open existing documents, and save documents in Word:

• Click the Microsoft Office Button and Click New or
• Press CTRL+N (Depress the CTRL key while pressing the “N”) on the keyboard
Opening an Existing Document

Connect your printer to your computer

If you examine the cable connecting the printer to your computer, chances are you’ll find a 36-pin Getronics connector on the end attached to the printer and a 26-pin D-type connector attached to the parallel port of your computer, which is called the printer port or LPT port.

The default printer port for most software is usually LPT1. If there are multiple parallel ports in your machine, they will be designated LPT1, LPT2, and so on.

There have been several enhancements to the capabilities of the parallel port since the days of the IBM XT machines. The original ports were unidirectional, which meant that they could send data but couldn’t receive it. They could, however, receive status information from the printer. These signals—such as paper out, busy, or error—control the flow of data to the printer.

Your printer has a data buffer that receives the data from the computer and supplies it to the printer at a rate that the printer can accept. The signals from the printer to the parallel port turn on and off this flow of data.

Each of the 26 conductors on your printer cable is important to the proper operation of your printer. A bad cable can produce all sorts of strange printing problems.

If you have a late-model computer with a parallel port that supports ECP/EPP modes and you use a modern, fast printer that can take advantage of it, be sure to connect them with a high-quality IEEE 1284 compliant cable. The price will seem high for a printer cable, particularly when you compare it with the lowest priced cables, but it’s worth the money.

The fastest way to troubleshoot a cable with no obvious defects is to substitute a known good cable and see if the problem goes away. Or, you can place your questionable cable on a system that is having no problems, to see if your problems follow the cable.

How to Reseat a Desktop Memory Module

Memory moduels plug directly into the motherboaerd so they are always located inside the computer case. Before you can reseat memory, you must power down the pc and open the box so you can access the moduels.

Most computers come in either tower-sized models or desktop-sized models. Tower cases usually have screws that secure removable panels on either side of the case but will sometimes feature release buttons instead of screws. Desktop support cases usually feature easy release buttons that allow you to open the case but some will feature screws similar to tower cases.

For screwless cases, look for buttons or levers on the sides or rear of the computer that are used to release the case. If you're still having difficulties, please reference your computer or case manual to determine how to open the case.

Note: These steps show how to reseat any kind of desktop memory. There are many different kinds of memory that a PC might use but the reseating process is identical for all of them.
